Inspiring Reasons to Travel Solo

I guess that a lot of people would love to travel but don’t do so because they are worried about doing it alone.

I was in the same situation before heading off from home the first time. So, what inspiring reasons are there for travelling solo?

To Make New Friends

Had I travelled with a group of friends then I would probably have spent all of my time with them. That wouldn’t have been terrible but it would have meant not meeting as many interesting new people along the way.

When you travel solo, one of the great things is the way that you make new friends so easily. Even then, you might only spend a day with someone before one of you moves on and you need to find new company.

This is probably a good way of learning how to make new friends and also of letting go when the time is right. On the other hand, you will see how the people who travel together often don’t make any effort to meet new people.

To Do Different Things

I used to watch football, play video games and go on long walks with the guy I almost travelled the world with. Had we went away together then I guess we would have done those same things in different places.

This wouldn’t have been the worst thing in the world. However, it would have meant that I would probably have missed out on visiting the stuffed animal museum in Baños, the tango show in Buenos Aires and many other interesting experiences.

All of the unusual things I did happened because I was either alone or else with someone who suggested I do something different. Travelling solo opens up so many new horizons for you in this respect.

To Read More Books

I love reading but in normal times I simply can’t find the time to read as much as I would like to. Between work and other commitments I can go weeks without finishing a book.

This meant that one of the great pleasures of travelling for me was sitting in a restaurant with a good book or getting ready to read in bed at night. If I hadn’t been travelling solo then this pleasure would have been a lot more difficult to enjoy on a regular basis.

It might seem like a minor point but I genuinely believe that travelling is when you should enjoy all of the things that you most love doing. I read more books on a bigger variety of subjects while travelling than I probably ever will in the rest of my life.

If there is something you love doing alone – reading, eating, buying clothes or whatever – then this is a time to enjoy it to the maximum.

To Make It Up As You Go Along

Finally, when else in life can you just make up your plans as you go along? When travelling with a friend you are going to have make plans in advance and come to agreement on new ideas.

Unless you both think in exactly the same way, there is likely to be some disagreement along the way if you try and make things up on the hoof. What if one of you wants to go the big city and the other prefers to hit the beach?

When you have no-one to answer to then you get a giddy feeling of freedom that is completely intoxicating. When you wake up in the morning you can do exactly what you want to do no matter how crazy it sounds.

Travelling with friends is fun but doing it alone bring a whole new dimension to life that everyone should experience at least once.
